I was so blessed to have Dr. Halsey perform emergency surgery as I had broken my hip. He visited me a few times during my recovery in the hospital. I found him to be very knowledgeable and pleasant. I am sorry to hear he will no longer preforming surgery but I am sure whatever his next chapter is he will be the best!!

I’m so Happy I was able to stay ‘on island ‘ for my total knee replacement surgery. To be able to come home & not have to drive to the SSA & get on a boat meant the world to me. Everything went great. I would recommend the MVH & Dr Halsey & his team to anyone

During the recent snowstorm, I took an unfortunate fall on some black ice and did some damage to my foot and ankle. The day staff in the ER — doctors, nurses, and residents — were great. What stood out for me was the unbelievable patient care that I received from our new orthopedist, Dr. David A. Halsey. From initial exam (which was incredibly painful due to nerve damage), to going above and beyond to make sure that I had a properly fitted boot, as well as a follow-up appointment at Mass. General with a foot trauma specialist, your doctor is the representation of how patient care should be. In today’s day and age, where most often in a health care setting you are not seen promptly, or attentively, it was a surprising breath of fresh air to encounter a physician with the attitude that your doctor demonstrated to me. He truly went above and beyond what has become “normal” patient care to be sure that I was diagnosed properly with appropriate follow-up. I hope the Island realizes what a gem your doctor is, and how unbelievably lucky the we are to have him practicing here. So please join me in saying, Welcome, your doctor! – Ariana Felberg Aquinnah

My adult daughter suffered a serious ankle injury from a fall on black ice. When Dr. Halsey was called in, not only did he accurately and thoroughly assess her injury, he went way above expectations to assure that she had a properly fitted walking boot. He then made an appointment at Mass. General for a follow-up consult with a foot and ankle specialist. Upon arrival at MGH, we were informed that no appointment existed, the doctor had a full schedule, and the supposed time was during his lunch hour! your doctor personally intervened with the appropriate people at MGH, and within 15 minutes, we were seen by the specialist with outstanding care, information, and follow-up. I hope the residents of the Vineyard realize and appreciate the gem that has landed on our shores. In my 40-plus years of treating patients, I have rarely seen such outstanding caring from a health care provider! Thank you, thank you. – Dr. Phil Feldberg Windsor, Conn, and Aquinnah

I was recently diagnosed to have my hip replaced. So I had surgery at. I want to thank Dr. Halsey and crew. I came out of surgery and was walking the same day. But not only do I want to thank the doctor and crew, but everyone else — the nurses, the woman who cleaned my room every day. The food was great. My thanks to the complete staff of angels working under the roof of M.V. Hospital. I am so grateful. Six weeks later, I feel great. I can’t imagine better care anywhere on the planet. – Ted Karalekas Vineyard Haven

On April 6th, I came crashing to the floor in a point-perfect landing on my left hip, and the next morning, I was on operating table, getting a full hip replacement. So now it is my turn to write one of those Letters to the Editor about care received. We have not been wrong to sing praises of our M.V. Hospital staff: from the ER nurse who wheeled me in to the person from the nurses’ station who wheeled me out, and coached me through easing myself into the car, from the surgeon., Dr. David Halsey, and his team to the guy who emptied the trash in my room, every single staff person I met was a pleasure to work with. I felt well taken care of, I felt supported, and they made it easy to be cheerful and optimistic. Having a high-quality hospital with the range of services we have here is an unmitigated blessing. I can’t tell you how grateful I was to not find myself on the stretcher in the ambulance on the way to Boston. That alone put me in a good mood from the get-go. About falls prevention: This accident happened in a split second. Believe me, I had other plans for the weeks to come! At a certain point, there is no such thing as “falling safely.” When both feet at once are tossed into the air at high speed, you quickly learn that Gravity Wins, every time. If gravity is not your friend, it’s your enemy. So falls must (and to a certain extent, can) be prevented. In my case, the slippery-soled boots I’d been meaning to fix might have made all the difference. For someone else, it’s the throw rug. And in almost every case, it’s “being in a hurry.” An ounce of deliberation is worth a pound of time saved … And now about pain management: From the start, I told doctors, nurses, physical therapists, and anesthesiologists that I am an addict in recovery, and intend to do everything I can to avoid taking opioid pain medications. They respected my wishes, and it turns out that in my case, Tylenol and the prescribed anti-inflammatory were perfectly sufficient to keep the pain within reasonable limits. I found three elements to be invaluable in enabling me to forego opioids: Realistic expectations about pain (why would you expect to be “pain-free” after real trauma and significantly invasive surgery?), patience (which is another way of saying having realistic expectations about your limitations at each and every moment of the process), and last but not least, ice packs. Cooling gives you a direct, controllable way of feeling relief, and that matters. I am now happily going to outpatient PT, and my high regard for the hospital (including the way the artwork on the walls breaks the monotony of the hallways) has only grown stronger. – Marina Lent Vineyard Haven

Dr. Halsey did total knee replacements on both of my knees, one in September 2015 and the second in November 2015. The entire process was superior. My knees were severely damaged from years of high impact sports, work, and play. I interview two other orethopedic surgeons before him and he was great to work with start to finish as was his staff, especially Tammy his nurse. I wanted knees that I could use actively and selected him from a small group of surgeons that would provide Oxinium knees.
